Botox in South Korea

Cosmetology

Botox in South Korea and other countries has become so ubiquitous that many people are either well-acquainted with the procedure or have undergone it themselves. Today, the quest for perfect skin is a widespread goal, thanks in large part to how Koreans have championed the “glass skin” effect. However, when faced with lines and wrinkles, skincare alone may not suffice. Particularly moderate to severe facial lines and wrinkles often require interventions such as the ever-popular Botox.

What Is Botox Treatment?

Botox, or Botulinum toxin type A, is a medication approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that delivers neurotoxins to the injection site. These neurotoxins can be thought of as a poison that slows down the function of nerves near the injection area. It’s supplied in powder form and mixed with saline solution before being administered to a patient.

The injections help relax the nerves, thereby preventing nerve cells from sending signals to the muscles and stopping the muscles from contracting. This medication can be used on the body as well as the face and is most commonly employed to treat lines and wrinkles.

The most commonly treated areas with Botox include the forehead, eyes, jaw, calves, and nose. Accordingly, Botox injections are generally recommended for individuals:

  • With overdeveloped jaw muscles

  • With large or full calves

  • Who experience discomfort due to excessive sweating

  • Looking to lift their face

  • Wishing to reduce facial lines and wrinkles

  • Seeking to slim their calf line without surgery

  • With excess fat in the chin area

  • With skin problems around the eye area

Types of Botox Treatment

Over the years, Botulinum toxin injections have evolved and are used not only on the face but other body parts as well. Depending on a patient’s needs, there are four types of injections available today. Despite their differences, all four options contain the same active ingredient—Botulinum toxin. One is distinct as it primarily consists of Botulinum toxin type B, while the others contain type A. The four types of Botulinum toxin injections are:

  • Botox is considered a treatment to temporarily improve the appearance of vertical lines, also known as glabellar lines or lines between the eyebrows. These are visible when squinting, frowning, or concentrating. It’s also for horizontal lines, such as those on the forehead, and lines around the eyes, commonly referred to as crow’s feet. This treatment acts slower than Dysport but has a longer-lasting effect.

  • Dysport is designed to treat moderate to severe vertical lines on the forehead and those around the eyes. This Botulinum toxin injection works slightly faster than Botox and costs more than Xeomin.

  • Xeomin is used to treat horizontal forehead lines and any lines visible around the eye area. This injection treatment lasts slightly longer than Botox and doesn’t contain any additives, meaning it doesn’t need refrigeration. Studies suggest that people are less likely to become resistant to it because it’s pure.

  • Mybloc is the only type of Botulinum toxin injection that doesn’t contain Botulinum toxin A, as it comprises Botulinum toxin B. It’s suggested that those who have become immune to Botox and Dysport due to continuous use might consider Mybloc as an alternative.

Botox’s widespread popularity in Korea and beyond for achieving flawless skin is a testament to its effectiveness in combating wrinkles and lines, not just on the face but the body too, fulfilling both aesthetic and medical needs.

Botox is predominantly utilized for cosmetic and aesthetic purposes, primarily aimed at reducing moderate to severe facial wrinkles and lines. However, its application extends beyond the face, offering solutions for body sculpting such as calf slimming and contouring, or augmenting volume in various body parts. Additionally, Botox serves lesser-known, yet significant medical roles, addressing bodily functions that require intervention. Among these medical applications of Botox are:

  • Cervical Dystonia – a condition characterized by involuntary contractions of the neck muscles, leading to uncomfortable twists and turns.

  • Lazy Eye – a disorder caused by an imbalance in the muscles responsible for positioning the eye.

  • Muscle Contractures – neurological conditions like cerebral palsy, where Botox injections help relax contracted muscles.

  • Hyperhidrosis – excessive sweating beyond normal levels for temperature regulation.

  • Chronic Migraine – Botox can reduce the frequency of migraine attacks.

  • Eye Twitching – Botox provides relief for twitching eye muscles.

Procedure Before & After

Despite being a non-surgical treatment, Botox therapy begins with a mandatory consultation with a doctor. During this consultation, the doctor assesses your suitability for the treatment and examines the areas requiring attention. They then discuss the planned procedure, associated risks, and any other pertinent information.

Given that botulinum toxin is in powder form, it is mixed with a saline solution by the doctor and their team. Once prepared, it is loaded into a disposable syringe. Before administering Botox, the target area is cleaned with an antiseptic wipe. While anesthesia is not required, local anesthesia may be offered upon patient request. Tiny doses of Botox are then injected into the treated area using micro-needles attached to a syringe.

Immediately following the treatment, a noticeable reduction in wrinkles and lines is visible, rendering the face smoother and more youthful. First-time Botox recipients are strongly advised to treat only one area to allow the doctor to observe the body’s response to the medication. Depending on the dosage, your reaction to the injection, the volume of the dose, and the type of botulinum toxin used, follow-up treatments are typically necessary every 3-6 months.

Botox treatments have gained global popularity as one of the quickest methods for addressing wrinkles and bodily functions. With various types of botulinum toxin treatments available, individuals can now choose the most suitable option for their needs. However, achieving a pronounced effect usually requires multiple sessions, which also help maintain the outcome. For those with limited time for post-surgical recovery, Botox offers an ideal solution, promising immediate and reliable results.

These injections are FDA-approved and deemed safe for both medical and cosmetic use. Nonetheless, it’s crucial to select a reputable clinic and a plastic surgeon with exceptional skills for the procedure. Careless treatment can lead to dissatisfaction and an undesired appearance lasting months or even years.
